Summer 2014

Geometry: Introduction to Euclid

9-12 Grade :: Online Classes & Offline Classes Available

During this 5-week workshop, we’ll take a close look at Book I of the Elements, in which Euclid lays out the foundation of his geometry. This course is meant to be a more leisurely study of Book I than time allows for in first semester of Classical Mathematics I.

This workshop is a great introduction to geometry and deductive logic and has no mathematical prerequisites. You may also consider counting this workshop as an addition to your students regular math for an Honors designation. Suggested weight: 1/4 credit.

Required materials

Online Class: 15 seats available.
Offline Class: 7 seats available.

Cost: $100 $50 (Online tuition payable only by check. Offline tuition payable by check or cash). Please note that I’m offering this course at an extreme discount because this is a pilot program. Next year’s workshop will not be available at the current price.

Schedule

  • Online Class will meet Tuesdays & Thursdays from 8-9:30AM.
  • Offline Class will be held from 10-11:30AM Tuesdays & Thursdays at Maycock House in Travelers Rest, SC.
  • All classes will begin on Tuesday June 17 and will end on Thursday July 24. There will be no classes the week of 4 July.

Writing Reasonably

9-12 Grade :: Class will be held in Travelers Rest

As an English major in college, I noticed that while good writing was stressed, good thinking was not. Nobody thought to teach thinking along with writing, although the two are inseparable. In this 5-week workshop, we’ll focus on thinking well as much as on writing well.

Come to class prepared to write and think (and also discuss). We will spend 5 weeks learning the mechanics of good prose, how to organize thoughts into arguments and essays, and how to avoid lazy thinking. Most of the writing will be done outside of class, giving us time to discuss both the principles of good writing and the principles of thinking well. All submitted assignments will returned with detailed comments and corrections.

Required materials: Strunk and White’s Elements of Style

Schedule: Class will be held Tuesdays & Thursdays from 1-2:30PM at Maycock House in Travelers Rest, SC. Class will begin on Tuesday June 17 and will end on Thursday July 24. There will be no classes the week of 4 July.

7 seats available.

Cost: $200 payable only by cash or check.
